"It's a series of imaginary tableaux about Los Angeles. It's about a city gifted with a legendary dimension and not entirely physical, so it can get to isolate you from reality. For many, many years I've been suspicious of Los Angeles. I think it has to do with the fact that I wasn't driving yet when I first visited it, so I had to stay in a Hollywood hotel looking out the window. That first weird experience with the city was the spark that ignited Cracker Island."
"We wanted to emphasize that we live in times in which sects of all kinds surround us. Any trend ends up generating an exacerbated cult. TikTok, for example, is a factory of self-combustible cults: you can go in today an discover some that didn't exist yesterday. Maybe they'll be dissolved by tomorrow."
"It's very easy to suffer from delusions of grandeur in a culture like today's. The messiah complex is very real today, and it's evidently powered by social media. History teaches us how things end for false prophets, the madness that comes with any movement with one of them at the center."
"The very idea of the Devil is ridiculous, because it's something that Christianity created to discredit other belief systems. It's not very different from what Putin is doing now, the way in which he labels the Ukranian people as Nazis... Clearly it's not true, but the demonization of the other has been a constant in the history of humanity. Therefore, the occultism is, for me, a reminder that there are always alternatives to that official truth. Don't believe it."
Collaborators:
"Each of them brings something to the overall Gorillaz mythology, to this imaginary world we've been building for years. It's a strange world, but it's ours. On this occasion, what we add to that lore is an album that's emotionally very open and full of songs that draw attention to other topics."
Technology and future:
"It has completely surpassed us, right now we cannot keep up with technology. The only thing we can do is try to stay in the conversation, but I don't know if that's feasible..."
"It's very difficult to force yourself to always be in the front row of everything. I'm quite a luddite myself, to tell you the truth. I'm very bad with technology, which is a constant source of frustration for the young people around me. I'm dumb, but I really appreciate the patience they show me."
"The beginnings seem so far away... I went from Blur to a band in which everything was to be explorer, to be built. It seems to me that what we did in those early days of Gorillaz was imagine what the future was going to be like, and in many ways we were right. But it's no longer our responsibility. It was an adventure, and it still is." (edited) (edited)
